“there is a crack in everything…that’s how the light gets in…”
-Leonard Cohen, “Anthem”
CRACK
by Diane L. Tucker
the crack in my perfect countenance
is achingly visible now
and how strangely I rejoice
the thin edge of the wedge is in
and the insides are leaking out
pomegranate red, wet and messy as jam
brush against me and you may feel it
I’m a walking stain now
red wine spilling down your laundered shirtfront
there’s only so long you can fall
and bounce back
before you crack-think fallen watermelon
slashed surface of rare steak
the first bite of strawberry pie
shattered crust, gelatinous sweet redness
escaping across the clean china
what other way to taste?
what other way to be – gloriously – tasted?
