Power of Personal Narrative

J. Christian Jensen talks of the power of a personal narrative in this TED talk. When choosing stories to make into movies or documentaries, one of the questions he asks is “is there something in this story that connects with my personal narrative?” If he can answer yes, then he believe he can tell the story in a way no one else can.

When we know who we are and own our narrative – the whole narrative, not just parts we ‘like’ – it becomes powerful as we own our unique perspective. We stop trying to be someone else.

This is vital in our lives and in our work. When we show up with our whole selves and invite our teams to bring their unique perspective to discussions, we have a greater chance of success.
