Playing the Lottery

playing the lottery

‘In this time of COVID, we need help with digital literacy.’

A truthful statement, but also unhelpful. Digital literacy is a broad category home to everything from computer basics to algorithmic coding and ethics. Talking about algorithmic bias with someone who doesn’t know what to do with pop up boxes on a website is unhelpful.

Spending time understanding what the challenge a person, team, organisation is experiencing helps everyone involved. Being clear on the challenge or problem gives us a chance to hit the mark. Without it, we’re merely playing the lottery.

And while this is true about digital literacy, it is also true about every other category or request for help.

It may seem obvious. And yet, most of us choose to play the lottery rather than doing the work.
