Standards - missing in action

When we walk into buildings we don’t worry if they will randomly collapse on us. We trust and assume they are built to certain standards that have been worked out to keep buildings standing and us safe. Similarly with vehicles, we assume they have been built to various safety standards. The same with food and so on.

However, when it comes to privacy and data, there are no similar standards. There may be a few that begin to think and act in similar way, but overall it is more of a wild west.

Perhaps it’s time to change that.

We can’t dump all responsibility for privacy on to the individual as they will be inundated with requests all day long. We need some sort of privacy standards like building standards that put the onus on the ‘builder’ not the customer.

And no, GDPR does not do this.
