Humanitarian organisations are not companies and companies are not humanitarian organisations. While we can learn from each other, we can not copy practices exactly. And while we can learn a lot from industry bodies about running organisations, managing data and digital transformation, remembering we have different purposes is also critical.
Perhaps data about the people we work with doesn’t need to be hoarded and controlled. Perhaps we can enable them to have access to it. Or perhaps we can take a completely different approach. We can learn from the private sector, but it is unlikely in the long run if we copy them.
Steal like an artist, just don’t copy.
