As a parent, one of the things our kids want most of all is to be ‘seen’. It doesn’t matter if they are riding a bike, drawing a picture, or dancing. “Dad, Dad, look at me!” is a common phrase. When they feel ‘seen’ they behave differently. We can engage in at a different level.
When we grow into adults, this need remains. It may not be about riding a bike, but the desire remains. When we, as change makers, enter their world, perhaps the best first step is to ensure the others feel ‘seen’.
Perhaps the whole conversation will be different. And quite frankly, what do you have to lose?
