Sometimes we make the choice to ignore the worry, the warnings, and forge a new path. The more we hear ‘it can’t be done’ and ‘that is not how things are done around here’, the more determined we become. And we know it comes with disappointment, hard conversations, letting good people go, but it is a new path and change is needed now.

Other times we make choices to go slowly, plod along, encouraging others to join us. We listen, we go at the pace of the slowest. One step at a time. Consistent. And we know it comes with disappointment, hard conversations, letting good people go. Change is needed but so is the team, and we’re in it for the long haul.

Leadership knows when to use which approach. And that neither pleases everyone. But leaders know that leadership is not about pleasing everyone, it is about the courage to choose a direction and a path to get there.
