Included this week’s Feasts and Fables newsletter was a wonderful quote from James R. Sherman’s book ‘Rejection‘.
You can’t go back and make a new start, but you can start right now and make a brand new ending.
This is a fairly good summary of the life of a change maker. Change isn’t about time travel and rewriting history. And it is not about ignoring history. Rather change is about starting where you are, learning from and building on history. In many ways, change is about jumping into a story that is already being told and impacting the storyline. It’s more improv than essay writing. And improv is requires a possibility mindset.
Setbacks are a part of life – personal life, professional life, just life. Everyone has them, including change makers everywhere. However, as James in the quote above, after we have a setback we can begin to write a different ending. Perhaps a surprise ending. And yes, sometimes the ending takes years to come to take shape, but it all begins now.
And no one is saying change is easy. We know it is not. But it is possible if you start today. What’s a small step you can take today to change the ending? Then do it again tomorrow.
It’s a mindset.
