Consultants and Teams

consultants and teams

When you hire someone on a consultant contract, do you treat them different to hiring someone on an employee contract? If so, why? Are they less of a team member than you? Or others on your team?

To my shame, I have realised I do this. And have done this over the past 2 months. I don’t even know why. I am working with two absolutely brilliant people, stunningly smart and creative. In the hiring process, we discovered for all kinds of reason that it worked better for all parties to use a consultancy contract rather than an employee one. So that’s the route we took. (And to be clear, I’m not talking about consulting firms like the big five.)

And yet, because of that decision, I have treated them slightly differently. Not bad, but different.

This is a tough realisation to come to. One that makes me embarrassed and ashamed. It shouldn’t be that way.

Perhaps my shame can stop you from repeating my mistakes.

And yes, today is a new day and I, we, can start again.
