It is easy to have grand goals and visions – ask anyone who has ever made a new year’s resolution. Most of our projects and organisations talk about goals and visions too. And many of them suffer the same fate as new year’s resolution.
What if, instead of or in addition to goals and visions, we talked about the habits we needed to achieve them. So shifting from weight loss to going to the gym 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Or from improving time management to blocking Tuesdays as meeting-free days and working offsite. Or from create a culture of gratitude to writing 3 hand written thank you notes every Friday morning before opening your laptop.
As the proverb goes, how we spend our minutes is how we spend our days and lives. So when we change our habits or create new habits in ourselves and in our teams, we begin to enable the change we wish to see.
