If you spend the time creating a strategy. If you involve me and others in that creation process. And then an opportunity comes along that doesn’t fit that strategy, but you take it anyway simply because it is an opportunity. Don’t expect people to be willing to contribute to your next strategy process. Just be opportunistic, call that your strategy and stop wasting your and everyone else’s time.
Being strategic requires hard decisions. It’s more about what you won’t do than what you will. It’s hard to be strategic without saying no. If that makes you uncomfortable, perhaps strategy is not for you.
